PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Trinidad and Tobago Unified Calypso Organisation (TUCO) Friday said it was backing the stance taken by calypsonians to boycott the Calypso Monarch finals on Sunday if there is not an increase in the prize monies.

“The position that they took here this morning really and truly is an independent position. I don’t know where they are going or how far they are prepared to go with it, but the organisation stands behind them 100 per cent,” said TUCO president Lutalo Masimba.

Last year, the government allocated two million dollars (US$333,000) for the first prize in the competition. But the organisers said that the prize this year has been reduced significantly and are appealing to the private sector to make a much more meaningful contribution to the art form.

He said that 100 years after the first calypso song was recorded and with the country observing its 50thanniversary of political independence from Britain, there is still problems regarding the full recognition of the calypso art form here.

He said while the corporate community supports culture, “their focus is on the party music…but we continue to push forward and try to get sponsors on board.

“It is not a question of begging the government to increase the prize money, it is a question of appealing to Trinidad and Tobago on a whole. If there are corporate citizens who want to come on board to ensure that we have a nice Carnival on Sunday night, they are most welcome,” he added.

He said it is important for the national community “understanding the importance of what we do and underlining that with active support and not just mouth”.

At least five former winners are included in the 12 finalists for the show on Sunday, where the controversial policies of the People’s Partnership government, have been heavily criticised by the singers. Among the finalists are Weston Rawlins (Cro Cro), Dr. Hollis Liverpool (Chalkdust), Kurt Allen, Sandra Des Vignes (Singing Sandra); Michael Osuna (Sugar Aloes) and the defending monarch Karen Asche.

RULES

Each bokklechuk team comprises fourteen players: three chuckers, four duckers, one chain up specialist, one ragman (or woman, as the case may be), and five old alcoholics, because somebody has to empty the bottles to be used for game play.

The playing surface is to be a minimum 100 metres by 20 metres, selected by the two or more teams involved in the bokklechuk contest at game time.

The middle fifty to sixty metres of the playing area is to be occupied by the spectators of a Buju Banton concert performance.

Play begins when the first team’s old alco squad consumes the contents of four cases of local beer or stout, and carries the cases of empties to the preferred end of the playing area. When the other team takes up position at the other end, the first team gets first chuck.

Chuckers chuck bottles at the oppsong teams, attempting to hit duckers for six points and other opposing chuckers for three points. Ragmen are required to stop any bleeding within five minutes of initial injury or give up a further two points to the opposing team. Striking a ragman earns the chucking team twenty four points, but also invokes the wrath of Moko and as such is an inadvisable course in game play.

Teams earn one half of a point for each bottle that their chain-up specialist can encourage Buju audience members to chuck at the opposing team. If players of the opposing team are struck by a chained-up chuck, normal point calculations apply as above additional.

Players earn one point for any chuck that is caught and returned. Should a return chuck strike a player on the opposing team, normal point calculations apply additionally.

Play ends when both teams run out of chuckable bottles, when the Police break up the assembled gathering, or when Buju declares one more time that he not coming back to do another performance in Trinidad and Tobago.

“That’s true, Bob. And her opposite number is a former nutsman named Freddie who I understand had done great work for two other bokklechuk teams using crocus bag pieces, salt and leftover nuts shells. But let’s watch Sister Beverley do her stuff…”

Licia Ronzulli, an MEP from Italy, took her seven-week old daughter Victoria to work at the European parliament this week at Strasbourg.She kept her baby carefully cradled against her in a sling and occasionally leant to kiss her on the forehead. Photographs of Ronzulli cradling her daughter in a sling as she voted on proposals to improve women’s employment rights were broadcast around the world and published in newspapers from the US to Vietnam.

A very powerful image. Women’s employment rights are pretty dismal, especially here in the states, especially when it comes to family and maternity leave.
